Upgrade Your Kit Based on What You Break
Keep a small log—even a note in your phone—of every failure you see. Snapped laces on the approach. A goggle strap that let go mid-descension. Duct tape that peeled off damp fabric at 20°F without adhesion. Patterns show up fast. What usually breaks first is the stuff you never tested: the spare cord you've carried for years, the seam sealer that expired, the repair patch that never left its packet.
That sounds fine until you're standing over a torn boot welt with nothing but a tube of glue that's turned to rubber. So swap out what failed, and add what you actually reached for. If you borrowed a friend's wire brush or zip ties twice in one season, buy your own. If that repair tape didn't stick, replace it with a different brand—don't just carry more of something that didn't work. A kit that stays static is a kit that's slowly lying to you. Honestly—most of my kit is leftovers from what broke last winter, not what I packed for the first trip.
Build a Pre-Trip Gear Check Into Your Routine
Set the habit right after you pack, not the night before departure. Fifteen minutes, same order every time: boots, shell, insulation layers, gloves, headwear, pack straps. Flex each zipper, tug every buckle, shake the tent poles. Wrong order—checking the tent first—means you'll be too tired to notice a failing seam on your warmest layer. The trick is to do this while the coffee's still hot and your brain's fresh.

You'll find something. A stiff zipper that needs wax, a glove liner starting to delaminate, a daisy chain that's frayed under the load loop. Fix those at home, where you have options. Then pack your repair kit with the specific items you actually used in practice, not the standard store-bought assortment. A kit built from your failures beats a kit built from someone else's checklist.
Don't do this once. Make it the ritual—the last twenty minutes before gear goes in the car. Repairs tested under cold, kit refined by real breaks, and a pre-trip once-over that catches problems early. That's the loop. Do that, and the five-minute field fix holds because it's a backup, not a gamble.
